Skilled nurseing for my husband
| My husband had a severe stroke. He has a trach and feeding tube and cannot walk. He understands everything. I also have a downs syndrome daughter I care for too. It is so hard to find a person to relieve me to do my errands because he needs to be suctioned and aids aren't allowed to do it. I have to hire someone on my own and it cost so much. We have medicare and a medigap policy. Does anyone else face this problem? Thanks Anne |

Anne What city are you located in? Do you know if the suction issue is a policy of the provider or a function of state regulations. As you know, any reasonably intelligent and motivated person can be trained to suction a trach. I have seen some folks turn to a church that has a parish nursing program for this sort of help, some use a lower level provider that they contract with and others will get to know agency nurses who want to moon light and may be of help. |

| Nick, Thanks for your e-mail. I live in N.J. It is a state regulation. I called my church and they have no help. I did find someone on Craigs list who turned out to be a horror. I was going to call a nursing school to see if the students may be interested. I did talk to a few nursing that were interested in moon lighting but they were asking too much. Thanks Anne |

| Anne- Other options are LPNs, EMTs, and Respiratory therapists/ RT students. NJ has a process for "certified homemaker-home heath aide." I don't know if they can be properly trained or not but it might be worth checking. |
